What is IVF?
IVF is a common procedure for individuals or couples looking for fertility treatment. This advanced assisted reproductive technology can enhance the chances of pregnancy for couples facing fertility challenges by retrieving mature eggs from ovaries and fertilizing them with sperm in our IVF lab.
Once fertilized, the embryos are transferred back into the uterus for implantation. Some patients may choose IVF after freezing their eggs or embryos. At NewLIFE Fertility, only one embryo is transferred at a time to avoid a pregnancy with multiples (like twins or triplets).
Beginning Your IVF Journey
Before any treatment begins, you’ll meet with your fertility specialist for a consultation. During this stage, your fertility specialist will consider several factors, like medical history, treatment objectives, and aspirations for your family-building goals. We strive to provide you with guidance and support.
The IVF Timeline
Following the consultation, your fertility specialist will create an individualized fertility treatment plan—which may include IVF. To do this, your fertility specialist will first examine your medical records and prescribe fertility testing to decide on the appropriate course of action. All pre-treatment fertility testing will be closely examined, and could include blood tests, ultrasounds, semen analysis, or in some cases, a hysterosalpingogram (HSG).
Once fertility testing is complete, your fertility specialist will then prescribe a fertility treatment plan to enhance the likelihood of pregnancy. For patients who are recommended to undergo IVF, the process starts with ovarian stimulation which includes a series of self-administered injectable medications over a two-week period to stimulate the ovaries.
During this time, you will be closely monitored with blood work and ultrasound appointments. When the follicles mature, a trigger shot is administered to release the eggs and mark them ready for retrieval.
The egg retrieval procedure is performed around 36 hours after the trigger shot. This procedure is short and is done under anesthesia and ultrasound guidance. During this procedure, a needle is inserted through the vagina and into the ovaries to collect the eggs from the ovarian follicles. Recovery time is brief, and normal activities can be resumed within 48 hours.
IVF Treatment: Next Steps
Once the eggs are retrieved, they are then moved to our lab and fertilized with sperm from your partner or a donor. If your partner experiences male infertility, we may recommend intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) to inject a single sperm directly into an egg to enhance the chances of fertilization.
Eggs are closely monitored in our state-of-the-art IVF lab by our highly-skilled embryologists. Here, the fertilized embryos will develop in our lab for five days. On the fifth day, the embryos are graded, and the highest-graded embryo will be selected for transfer.
The chosen embryo is then transferred into the uterus and is ready for potential implantation. Throughout this process, your fertility specialist will closely monitor your progress and will conduct a pregnancy test two weeks after the embryo transfer.
