For patients already struggling with infertility, in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment near Dothan, Alabama, can be the pivotal next step—the one that helps turn your fertility journey into a success story.

Understanding IVF and Its Benefits

IVF is an advanced assisted reproductive technology designed to overcome many fertility challenges. The process involves retrieving eggs from the ovaries, fertilizing them with specially prepared sperm in a specialized lab, and transferring the resulting embryos into the uterus.

We may recommend some patients explore IVF as a fertility treatment to:

  • Address medical conditions that may interfere with fertility, like endometriosis or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
  • Manage male infertility factors, such as low sperm count.
  • Use previously frozen eggs or embryos for family planning.
  • Overcome unexplained infertility after trying other treatments.

IVF’s high success rates and flexibility make it a popular choice for individuals and couples seeking a reliable path to parenthood.

A Step-by-Step Look at the IVF Process

The IVF process involves several carefully coordinated steps designed to maximize your chances of achieving a pregnancy.

Fertility Consultation and Personalized Plan

Your IVF journey begins with an in-depth consultation with our NewLIFE Fertility specialists. We’ll review your medical history, previous conception attempts, and family-building goals during this visit, as well as answer any questions you have. Based on this information, we can recommend fertility testing to uncover any infertility factors, which help us create a personalized treatment plan for you.

Ovarian Stimulation and Egg Retrieval

Once your IVF cycle begins, our specialists will prescribe self-administered fertility medications over approximately two weeks to stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple eggs. During this phase, our team will closely monitor your progress through blood tests and ultrasounds.

When the eggs are mature, you’ll receive a “trigger shot” to prepare them for retrieval. About 36 hours later, our fertility specialists will perform the egg retrieval procedure. This short, outpatient procedure involves using an ultrasound-guided needle to collect eggs from your ovaries while you’re under light anesthesia for comfort.

Fertilization and Embryo Development

After retrieval, the eggs are carefully fertilized in our state-of-the-art lab using sperm from your partner or a donor. Our expert embryologists will monitor the embryos for five days. During this time, we evaluate their development and select the highest-quality embryo for transfer.

Embryo Transfer and Monitoring

On the fifth day, the selected embryo is transferred into your uterus through a minimally invasive procedure. Any other embryos that have progressed can be cryopreserved (frozen). Following the transfer, our team will provide detailed instructions on post-transfer care and monitor your progress. Two weeks later, you’ll return to the clinic for a pregnancy test to determine the results. Although it can be difficult to resist, we advise patients to avoid taking an over-the-counter pregnancy test before then, as it may provide inaccurate results.
