What Is IUI?

The right fertility treatments can make your family-growing dreams a reality. It’s our goal at NewLIFE Fertility to support patients on this path with advanced fertility treatments, including intrauterine insemination (IUI).

If you are considering IUI or are curious if this treatment is right for you, you can schedule an appointment to discuss your options with our fertility specialists.

What is Intrauterine Insemination?

Intrauterine insemination is a process that provides a direct path for sperm to reach and fertilize an egg in the fallopian tubes. During intercourse, only around 200 sperm successfully reach the fertilization site, which can make pregnancy challenging for many couples.1

IUI is a good starting point for many couples and individuals on their fertility journey. At NewLIFE Fertility, our fertility services are 30% to 40% less than the national average, allowing patients of all backgrounds and circumstances to move toward their family goals.

What Happens During the IUI Process?

IUI is a relatively straightforward process that can be completed in any NewLIFE Fertility clinic. Your fertility specialist will guide you through each step.

Preparation

Before beginning IUI, you will need to meet with one of our fertility specialists and undergo fertility testing. This crucial step of our care allows us to create the most personalized treatment plan for you. Some patients may need to take fertility medication to induce ovulation or increase egg production, which improves the chances of successful fertilization.

Procedure

The IUI process itself is short and often compared to a routine Pap smear. If you have a partner, we will collect the sperm sample on the same day as the procedure. If you do not have a partner, have low sperm count, or in a same-sex female relationship, donor sperm can also be utilized for IUI.

We then concentrate the sperm to ensure that only the healthiest, highly-motile sample is used, generally increasing the likelihood of fertilization. The sperm sample is then inserted into the uterus using a catheter. During the procedure, our fertility specialists will do our best to keep you comfortable.

Post-Procedure

Once the sperm sample has been deposited, we will ask you to remain in your position for around 10 minutes. Once completed, you can return to your normal activities.

We’ll schedule a follow-up appointment around two weeks following the procedure to administer a pregnancy test. While it may be tempting, we ask that you wait until this appointment to take a pregnancy test, as drug store tests can often provide inaccurate results.

Am I a Good Candidate for IUI?

IUI can help aspiring parents achieve their dreams of having a baby, including those who struggle with infertility. Before we begin the IUI process, you must first schedule a consultation and fertility testing with us.

Then, your fertility specialist may recommend IUI as a fertility treatment if:

  • You are a single woman who wants to have a baby
  • You and your partner are experiencing factors of male infertility
  • You and your partner are experiencing factors of unexplained infertility
  • You are in a same-sex female relationship and require donor sperm to create a pregnancy

The specialists at NewLIFE are committed to providing advanced, accessible fertility treatments to our patients. If you have questions about fertility treatment costs, please contact us to learn more.
